Kick The Chemicals

In my previous blogs I’ve stressed to you the importance of eating real food. In this blog I will go into further detail about the chemicals that have invaded our food supply. If you think the FDA is looking out for your best interest, think again.

When I read labels at the grocery store of the typical items that fill our shelves I see words like monosodium glutamate, butylated hydroxytoluene (or BHT- very common in children’s cereals), potassium bromate, sodium nitrite or nitrate, yeast extract… I could go on and on, but I think you get my point. If you don’t know what these things are, you cannot pronounce them and/or they sound like a chemical made in a laboratory then DON’T EAT THEM! Unfortunately for most, we carelessly ingest them AND feed them to our children never even having so much as glanced at the ingredient labels. You are not doing yourself OR your children any favors by eating these things.

Many of these chemicals have been found to be carcinogens, neurotoxins (substances that can negatively affect your nervous system) and endocrine disruptors. Your endocrine system is the system of glands within your body that produce hormones to regulate your metabolism, reproduction, sleep, mood, growth and development, among many other things. For those of you thinking these things don’t affect you, think again. Could these chemicals be hurting your metabolism by disrupting the function of your thyroid gland? Could the ingestion of so many foreign chemicals be the reason for your overall poor health and problems conceiving? Why even try them to find out? They are not natural and they are things that were NOT put on this Earth to be eaten.

This also includes the chemical pesticides that are being sprayed on your produce. I would encourage you, whenever possible, to buy organic and to support your local farmers. The same is true with your meat. It DOES matter what type of feed the animals you eat have been ingesting. You know that saying, “You are what you eat”?? Well, if you are eating meat from animals that were pumped full of antibiotics and are eating feed that is genetically-modified and full of chemicals, then you too are ingesting that. Choose grass-fed, free range meats and wild vs. farmed fish. Yes, I realize this can be more expensive, but until we start supporting our local farmers and ranchers who are producing chemical-free food and humanely-raised animals we will never see the disappearance of this chemical crap we see in our food today. It’s basic economics my friends. Supply and demand. If there is a demand for it, prices will go down! Until WE put that pressure on to STOP with the chemical-laden food (amongst many other things), things will never change. Bottom line.. STOP supporting companies who are profiting from your ailing health and START supporting those that are producing food that is not only good for you but good for the environment and the betterment of our society.

And be careful trusting the supplements, meal replacements or protein powders that are popular in most diet programs, especially because many of these things are not even from this country. Realize that any kind of supplement is NOT being regulated by the FDA or ANYONE for that matter. Yep, there is no regulatory board checking if these types of things are even safe for ingestion. Don’t believe me? Here it is from the FDA themselves…

This is a subject I could go on and on about, and one that is not just affecting our food, but I want to keep this short and simple. When we get back to eating real, chemical-free food, we are putting our bodies back into a state where they can function on a healthy level. This can translate to better overall health to include things like healthier skin, better-regulated metabolism, normal testosterone and estrogen levels, and perhaps even an absence of cancer and other neurological disorders to name a few.

I will end with some pictures I took of common foods at the local supermarket to give you an idea of where these chemicals are hidden. And this is just barely scratching the surface. Remember, as I said in my last blog (Eat Real Food), you should try to avoid most packaged foods. As you’ve heard before, shop the perimeter of the grocery store. Choose organic fruits and vegetables, along with grass-fed and wild meats and fish. Add healthy oils and nuts and seeds to your diet. KEEP IT SIMPLE!

I'll start with this one. This is one of those soups that you just add hot water to. This one and others like it are the true Kings of all chemical sh*tstorms!! Not sure where to even begin with this one, so I'll just let you read through it yourself. How many things can you identify as real food?

This is the label of a spice bottle. Yep, you need to check there too. Silica-Jel??? You got me.

Popular Children's cereal. Notice ALL of the chemical colors added?? Also notice the BHT- a preservative that has been shown to be a carcinogen in animal studies. I have an idea, let's show our children natural colors like those found in fruits and vegetables.

Another example of a popular children's cereal. There's the undefined "natural and artificial flavor" which could be ANYTHING among several other unrecognizable ingredients. If they are willing to list all of the other chemicals, how bad could the ones listed generically as "natural and artificial flavors" be?? Bad enough for them to not want to list it is what I would say. Also notice the cocoa (the one ingredient that could be healthy) is "processed w/ alkali". I talked about this in my Hot Cocoa Blog .

This is a microwave popcorn. Notice that "hydrogenated" oil? Avoid any food with "hydrogenated" fats AND trans fats. Also notice again the "natural and artificial flavors"... this is so non descriptive we don't know what could be hiding in that term.

Did you know most Ranch dressings still contain MSG- Monosodium Glutamate? I think many believe that their food no longer contains MSG, but this is not the case. The FDA classifies MSG as "generally recognized as safe". Hmm, "generally recognized". What does that mean? And this is who we trust for our food guidance. This is who has demonized fats in natural foods all the while allowing all of these toxins into our food. How is that working out for us? You can read about MSG for yourself and make your own decision, but again my take is "Why put something in your body that is not natural and could potentially harm you?". MSG isn't the only gem in this one. Go ahead and read the other unrecognizable ingredients in this one.

Seasoned potato chips. Yeast extract is found in almost all of your seasoned chips. Yeast extract has been the new replacement for MSG and DOES still contain glutamates like those found in MSG. See how those tricky bastards keep hiding things in your food??

This is a very popular sports drink. This is supposed to be good for us??? This is what we are giving to athletes? What exactly is hidden in the "natural and artificial flavors" and why is there a need for the chemical "blue 1"? Does making it blue make us feel like we somehow have superpowers??? Once again, I don't know a single ingredient in this drink except the water, sugar & salt.

Speaking of athletes, here is a popular protein powder. Again, notice all of the extra crap in these ingredients outside of the whey protein you thought you were buying.

Here's an example of gluten-free foods. The problem with gluten-free is they just add in other crappy carbohydrates that have no nutritional value like potato starch, rice flour and soy flour. Here's an idea... just get rid of the grains and breads altogether. You can get so much more nutrition out of real fruits and vegetables.

A VERY popular energy drink that I see people consuming multiples of per day. Besides the carbonated water, can you really identify ANY of the ingredients in this drink? This seems like a VERY dangerous habit to me. Need more energy? Try sleeping and a cup of coffee!

This is a perfect example of a non-fat yogurt. How are these working out for you? Are you just so filled up after eating one of these chemical-laden low cal, low fat treats you have no problem sticking to that diet? Or are you STILL hungry, ravenous & digging through the cupboard for something more which often leads to succumbing to that chemical-laden bag of chips? As I have said before, fat is not the enemy. The true enemy is all of the chemicals you are staring at in this oh-so-healthy yogurt.

Many people think that milk substitutes are healthy. While this may be true in SOME cases, most boxed or packaged milk substitutes add the ingredient carrageenan. The debate is still out on carrageenan. It has been shown to cause digestive issues among other things. This is once again an example of a chemical being added to your otherwise healthy food. For those of you that do consume regular dairy, look for it in those products also as it is often added to regular dairy products as well. Also, notice the addition of sugar or cane syrup (and organic at that). Let's take something that was supposed to be healthy, almond milk, and add sugar and chemicals so people will buy it.

I know this can all seem so overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be. All you can do is your best. Start by no longer buying these items and slowly replacing them with whole, real food. Get back to eating the way nature intended you to eat and I promise you will find yourself in a much better place.
