In my previous blogs I’ve stressed to you the importance of eating real food. In this blog I will go into further detail about the chemicals that have invaded our food supply. If you think the FDA is looking out for your best interest, think again.
When I read labels at the grocery store of the typical items that fill our shelves I see words like monosodium glutamate, butylated hydroxytoluene (or BHT- very common in children’s cereals), potassium bromate, sodium nitrite or nitrate, yeast extract… I could go on and on, but I think you get my point. If you don’t know what these things are, you cannot pronounce them and/or they sound like a chemical made in a laboratory then DON’T EAT THEM! Unfortunately for most, we carelessly ingest them AND feed them to our children never even having so much as glanced at the ingredient labels. You are not doing yourself OR your children any favors by eating these things.
Many of these chemicals have been found to be carcinogens, neurotoxins (substances that can negatively affect your nervous system) and endocrine disruptors. Your endocrine system is the system of glands within your body that produce hormones to regulate your metabolism, reproduction, sleep, mood, growth and development, among many other things. For those of you thinking these things don’t affect you, think again. Could these chemicals be hurting your metabolism by disrupting the function of your thyroid gland? Could the ingestion of so many foreign chemicals be the reason for your overall poor health and problems conceiving? Why even try them to find out? They are not natural and they are things that were NOT put on this Earth to be eaten.
This also includes the chemical pesticides that are being sprayed on your produce. I would encourage you, whenever possible, to buy organic and to support your local farmers. The same is true with your meat. It DOES matter what type of feed the animals you eat have been ingesting. You know that saying, “You are what you eat”?? Well, if you are eating meat from animals that were pumped full of antibiotics and are eating feed that is genetically-modified and full of chemicals, then you too are ingesting that. Choose grass-fed, free range meats and wild vs. farmed fish. Yes, I realize this can be more expensive, but until we start supporting our local farmers and ranchers who are producing chemical-free food and humanely-raised animals we will never see the disappearance of this chemical crap we see in our food today. It’s basic economics my friends. Supply and demand. If there is a demand for it, prices will go down! Until WE put that pressure on to STOP with the chemical-laden food (amongst many other things), things will never change. Bottom line.. STOP supporting companies who are profiting from your ailing health and START supporting those that are producing food that is not only good for you but good for the environment and the betterment of our society.
And be careful trusting the supplements, meal replacements or protein powders that are popular in most diet programs, especially because many of these things are not even from this country. Realize that any kind of supplement is NOT being regulated by the FDA or ANYONE for that matter. Yep, there is no regulatory board checking if these types of things are even safe for ingestion. Don’t believe me? Here it is from the FDA themselves…
This is a subject I could go on and on about, and one that is not just affecting our food, but I want to keep this short and simple. When we get back to eating real, chemical-free food, we are putting our bodies back into a state where they can function on a healthy level. This can translate to better overall health to include things like healthier skin, better-regulated metabolism, normal testosterone and estrogen levels, and perhaps even an absence of cancer and other neurological disorders to name a few.
I will end with some pictures I took of common foods at the local supermarket to give you an idea of where these chemicals are hidden. And this is just barely scratching the surface. Remember, as I said in my last blog (Eat Real Food), you should try to avoid most packaged foods. As you’ve heard before, shop the perimeter of the grocery store. Choose organic fruits and vegetables, along with grass-fed and wild meats and fish. Add healthy oils and nuts and seeds to your diet. KEEP IT SIMPLE!
I know this can all seem so overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be. All you can do is your best. Start by no longer buying these items and slowly replacing them with whole, real food. Get back to eating the way nature intended you to eat and I promise you will find yourself in a much better place.
